Over the last week, people from California who have been struggling with financial aid will get their first of many monthly $1,000 checks. This will happen for the next two years as part of the Universal Basic Income (UBI) program. Families who have been struggling with inflation and rising prices are the ones targetted for this program. Folks who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessmess will get this money, no strings attached. Pver the last week, about 10 to 15 households have been getting their first payments.

This program has been designed to help all participants getting the housing stability they have been looking for so long. It should also help them achieve greater independence over their own lives, finances and their future. Apart from the funds, all people who participate in this program will receive an evaluation in order to determine how effective this program is on housing, economic stability, health, and overall well-being.

Who is eligible for this UBI program and how to apply?

These no strings attached payments mean that the money can be spent however the recipients see fit. Such funds will be offered to those who don’t have a home and are financially unstable. Helf of these participants are referred from the County’s Coordinated Entry System in San Jose, California. The other half comes from the Si Se Puede! Collective, they are also referrals. All qualifying families will be contacted directly and about 150 of them will start seeing their funds early in 2023.
